(Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme brought to you by The Broke and the Bookish.)
Today’s challenge is to list your favorite characters within your favorite genre; but because I feel like being contrary, I’ve decided to go in a slightly different direction and list favorite characters from several genres.
Thursday Next – Adult fantasy
Thursday is the star of the Thursday Next series, one of my favorite of all time. She’s resourceful, sarcastic, and real. Plus she travels into books and meets characters like Mr. Rochester, Miss Havisham, and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle.
Katsa – YA fantasy
Katsa is the main character in Kristin Cashore’s Graceling. She’s totally kick-ass, and is one of the few book characters for which I’d consider leaving Best Friend. 😉
Lucy – Science fiction
Lucy was a fantastic novel, and I loved its main character’s spirit, bravery, heart, and willingness to love despite those who hate her.
Fee Atwater – Retold classics
The Little Women Letters is poised to be one of my favorite 2013 reads, mainly because of the family’s matriarch, Fee Atwater. I even wrote about her in a Character Spotlight.
Sophy – Regency novel
The Grand Sophy is considered Georgette Heyer’s best novel, and Sophy her best character. And why not? She’s brash, sarcastic, witty, clever as hell, and manages to sail through her own problems while simultaneously solving everyone else’s.
Adelia – Historical fiction
I love any woman who earns the moniker Mistress of the Art of Death. Feminist, sassy, and strong, Adelia is one of my favorites.
Who are some of your favorite characters?
Good twist! I like to do that sometimes, too. Don’t let any ol’ list try to tell YOU who’s boss!
LOVE Thursday Next – so it perplexes me why I didn’t enjoy The Last Dragonslayer very much. Did you read it?
Here’s my Top Ten Tuesday. I went in a little diff direction as well…
I very often “twist the list.” Mainly because if I don’t I start feeling like I’m writing the same list every week! Glad to see you shook things up on your post as well.
100% agreed on The Last Dragonslayer. It took me a long time to warm up to it; I guess I was expecting the same style and tone as Fforde’s other series, and obviously this one’s a big departure. I ended up liking it though, and would probably like it more if I went back and re-read it.
Thanks for stopping by!
Yay to Sophy, Katsa, and Thursday Next! All great characters from fantastic books!
Also, love that you included multiple genres in your list 🙂
I like your taste in characters and books. 🙂 Having multiple genres made it more fun!
