(Saturday Snapshot is brought to you by At Home With Books. Join us!)
It’s Mother’s Day weekend in the States, and I’ve been thinking about the mothers in my life a lot lately.
I was lucky to grow up surrounded by strong women. My mother raised me almost single-handedly. My stepmother had the courage to leave a shitty marriage and support herself (she married my dad later). Best Friend’s mom dealt with the separation and fears associated with marrying a military man. Both my grandmothers raised multiple children and worked.
Looking at pictures of my mother and her mother, I’m astounded how similar we look. I like to think I’ve also inherited their stubbornness, work ethic, and love of books and music and family.
My maternal grandmother. I think she’s about 18 in this picture. It’s either a high school graduation photo or an engagement/wedding shot.
My mom in her pre-teen and teen years. I’m like her carbon copy.
Gotta love the 1990s! Her hair is much shorter now (it’s growing back after chemo/radiation; my mom kicked cancer’s ass!), but she really looks about the same.
Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. Thanks for everything you’ve done, and everything you continue to do, to take care of me.
And thanks again for reading to me. ๐
Beautiful pictures!
Thanks! My family is full of beautiful people. ๐
What a wonderful collection of through-the-years pictures. Love your mom’s hair! I always wanted mine to be fluffy like that, but alas.
Her hair is only a little bit fluffier in that picture than it is normally. It involves hot rollers, a curling iron, and a crap-ton of hairspray. ๐ My hair could never look like that either.
Great family photos there!
I love being able to trace my looks through various family members too (especially my mom’s birth family after we tracked them down). It was so cool to see that I look just like my great-aunt, after never really looking like anyone else in the family other than my mom.
The first time I saw that photo of my grandmother was when she pulled it out during her and my grandfather’s 50th wedding anniversary. I’d always wondered where the shape of my lips had come from; and there they were, staring at me from my grandmother’s face! ๐
Looks like you’ve got lots of strong, beautiful women to look up to! Great pictures! ๐
They are strong and beautiful. I’m lucky to be related to them. ๐
Mother’s Day is a great time to reflect. Y’all sure do look alike!!!
We really do, especially when you compare pictures of us in our late teens. It’s freaky. ๐
Beautiful ladies! That 1990s picture is a real glamor shot!
Here’s my Snapshot.
It is a Glamour Shot! Those were all the rage in the late 90s and early 2000s. I even had some of me done when I was about 9. It was like playing dress up!
I loved this tribute in photos to your mom through the years, Hope she stays cancer-free.
Thank you, Diane. My mom’s been in remission for a little less than a year. She stopped wearing her wig several months ago, and is feeling positive and happy.
I can’t comment on your blog, but I love your photos. They’re perfectly representative of cats’ behavior. ๐
Wow, you all certainly are alike. Love you mom’s 1990’s photo ๐
There’s no doubt that I’m a part of this family. ๐
I do love the visual reminders of the physical similarities between daughters/mothers/grandmothers, etc. And the greater legacies like “stubbornness, work ethic, and love of books and music and family” are traits that can carry us through the hard stuff.
Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my blog.
Those traits have gotten me out ofโand maybe intoโa lot of trouble in my life. ๐ They’re the best things in the world.
It’s interesting to look at family photos. I just realised this week that I look quite a bit like my great grandmother! They’re some strong genes.
I was never into looking at family photos as a kid, but I think I’m starting to see the importance of doing so the older I get.
I can’t comment on your blog, but those black swan photos are impressive, and a little scary. Swansโat least the white ones with which I’m vaguely familiarโcan be mean, so I try to avoid them. But they are lovely, especially the black ones. Never seen a photo of them before.
