From the publisher:
“In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue — Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves…or it might destroy her.”
Quick thoughts
I was all set to say that I was done with dystopian, but the reviews and blurb for Roth’s book reeled me back in.
While it’s pretty safe to assume that I won’t be reading much more dystopian, I will say that I was pleasantly surprised by Divergent. It brought home the idea that something just wasn’t right with the world, but didn’t beat you over the head about it.
So although it wasn’t my favorite, I enjoyed learning about the world Roth created, as well as speculating to which faction I (and my friends) would pledge my allegiance (answer: Probably in Erudite. Boo, hiss, I know).
In honor of the fact that I actually kinda-sorta-maybe-a-little-bit-enjoyed dystopian just this once, I’m having a giveaway! The prize is, of course, a copy of the very book that was just under discussion.
Win a copy of Divergent
Entering is pretty easy. All you have to do is:
- be a follower of my blog
- and fill out the form at the bottom of this entry
The winner will be selected through a super-secret process (read: a number generator), and will have their winnings in as short a time as the United States Postal Service will allow. Included with Divergent you’ll get some cute (or manly, depending) goodies, as well as the knowledge that you’ve given a good book a great home.
The giveaway ends September 29th. That’s just two weeks away, so fill out the form below to enter to win!
Thank you very much for such a sweet giveaway!!! <3
I just signed up to follow you via email ~
Thanks for entering! It’s my first giveaway, and I was afraid that nobody would enter. Fortunately a good number have, so I feel better. 🙂 Good luck to you!
I really enjoyed learning about the world that Veronica Roth created. I actually enjoyed that part even more than the plot! I’m looking forward to Insurgent. Hopefully the plot will pick up a little bit!
I’m with you, Tara — I was way more interested in the the world and how the characters interacted within their factions, than I was in the plot. I haven’t decided if I’ll read Insurgent yet, but we’ll see. I
Thanks for the giveaway. Found your blog via WWW Wednesday – thanks for stopping by mine earlier today. I am a new follower via email.
Good luck to you in the giveaway. Nothing like a good dystopian novel to cleanse the palate after Eat, Pray, Love. 😀
