Notable Quotables: Erma Bombeck

Posted on February 7, 2011November 7, 2024 by amypeveto

(Notable Quotables is a meme brought to you by the Bewitched Bookworms. Every Monday you’re invited to share a favorite quote or two from the books you’ve been reading.)

As I mentioned in my debut books list, Erma Bombeck was a writer gifted the art of (occasionally snarky) observation. Today’s quotes are all by the incomparable Mrs. B, without whose writing many a mother would be completely insane.

On exercise:

“The only reason I would take up jogging is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.”

On dieting:

“In two decades, I’ve lost a total of 789 pounds. I should be hanging from a charm bracelet.”

On housework:

“Housework can kill you if done right.”

And her requested epitaph for her headstone:

“Big deal! I’m used to dust.”

Bombeck wrote over 12 books throughout her career, and all of them are worth reading. There are several other women from around that same time who wrote similar books, including Jean Kerr (Please Don’t Eat the Daisies), Teresa Bloomingdale (I Should Have Seen it Coming When the Rabbit Died), and Prudence Mackintosh (Thundering Sneakers). They’re all hysterical.
