(Saturday Snapshot is brought to you by At Home With Books. Join us!)
I took this photo this past Thursday at a workshop/class where we talked about the history of Sacred Harp and taught some of the tunes. Sacred Harp is my favorite, and it was great to see so many people there. The man on the left side of the photo (in the green long-sleeved shirt) is Leon, and he’s fun to sit next to. He’s been singing since he was a kid, and the Sacred Harp tradition carries through his entire family.
Leon’s sitting in the Tenor (melody) section. On the top left is the Bass section, top right is Altos, and bottom right is Trebles. I sing Tenor cause I’m a newbie. ๐
No talent here, but hope you had fun.
I had lots of fun, thanks! ๐
That sounds like a lot of fun! Thanks for adding that link – I’d never heard of it before. How great you joined Saturday Snapshot. Doesn’t have to be fancy pictures, just fun and everyday ones.
I auto-add that link any time I mention Sacred Harp โ most people haven’t heard of it, and think I sit in a room strumming an actual harp. ๐
I’ve hopped around to other blogs in the Linky and seen some cool photos. Thanks for recommending Saturday Snapshot!
It’s fun to see what bloggers do in their spare time. Looks fun!
I like getting glimpses into other bloggers’ lives too. Makes me feel like I “know” them better. It is lots of fun! Exhausting, too.
Sacred Harp is new to me, so I hopped over to read the description. It sounds like so much fun, but then I love singing, so anything singing related is appealing.
Isn’t singing the best? It’s one of my resolutions this year to sing more โ finally, a resolution that’s easy to keep! ๐
They have hundreds of singings every year, you should check one out sometime. You can find all kinds of lists of events at fasola.org
Looks like a friendly bunch. Hope you had a good time.
They are friendly โ go to one singing and you’re part of the family. ๐ I had a great time!
The Sacred Harp is cool but this is my first time here and I wanted to say I LOVE
1) your name BOOKZILLA
2) your ambitious and ill-fated mission
3) your blogs vibe
Thank you, Sim! “Ambitious and ill-fated mission,” what a great way to describe it! I know I won’t get to read everything, but I’ll sure have fun trying! Thanks for your sweet thoughts, and for stopping by.
Sacred Harp is new to me, although my church does sing acapella. My aunts and uncles used to talk about learning to sing form shape notes. Wonder if that is related. Glad you had a good time. Singing can certainly lift the spirits.
I love good acapella singing. Church of Christ, right? I know that denomination in particular doesn’t use any instrumentation for their singing.
Sacred Harp is often called “shape note singing,” and we do indeed sing the shapes. There used to be singing schools all over the south; depending on your relatives’ age and where they lived, they might have gone to a singing school, but may have learned a seven-note system instead of Sacred Harp’s four-note one.
Agreed in your assessment of singing โ there’s nothing better! Well, maybe reading. ๐
That *does* sound like fun!
It’s so much fun. Absolutely exhausting, but fantastic.
I tried to comment on your post, but it won’t let me. ๐ I was going to say this:
My mother-in-law would hit the roof with excitement at DVRAC. She’s an artist, and really into ancient art like petroglyphs and cave paintings. It’s amazing that art that old has survived all these years. You’re lucky to have seen it!
Enjoyed looking at the photographs!
Here is my Saturday Snapshot post!
Thanks! I’ll hop over to yours right now!
