I love weekly bookish memes; over the past two years I’ve participated in Notable Quotables (since retired), Book Blogger Hop, Top 10 Tuesday, and WWW Wednesdays. They’ve all brought me great things, including a more nuanced reading palate and connecting me to fabulous bloggers whom I may never otherwise have “met.”
Time, however, is marching on, and the idea of doing these exact memes for another year is feeling a bit stifling. So I’m considering revamping my meme participation. Nothing like fresh ideas to get the blood flowing.
This is where you guys come in.
- In what memes do you guys participate? What do you like/not like about each?
- Of the two memes that I’m currently doing weeklyโTop 10 Tuesday and WWW Wednesdaysโwhat do like/not like about each? Are you getting tired of one (or both)?
I’d love to know what other events like this are happening elsewhere in the book blogosphere. My only two criteria are as follows:
- I have a day job, so I prefer doing a meme that announces its topic in advance. Things like Book Blogger Hop are hard for me to do because the week’s question doesn’t go up until Friday morning, when I’m already at the office and don’t have the time/energy to write my post after work.
- Memes with wide participation. Otherwise how am I to find more great blogs to follow?
I place myself in you guys’ capable hands. Lead on! ๐
The Literary Blog Hop at The Blue Bookcase (once a month) is a really good one. ๐

I did this one a few times last year, I think. Guess it’s time to cycle back around. ๐
I sometimes participate in a couple of the memes you’ve mentioned but haven’t done any in a long time. I don’t know . . . trying to put a post together on a theme and a schedule just got me frantic. Although the exposure to other blogs and must-read book titles was really compelling! The only one I do regularly now is Saturday Snapshot over at http://athomewithbooks.net/. It’s pretty quick and easy to pull off and kind of cool too. The theme is personal photos but the participants are all book bloggers because the host is a book blogger herself. You should give it a try – it’s every Saturday.
I agree with you about the scheduling feeling a little stressful. But I enjoy posting frequently, and I don’t have time to read enough books to post as much as I want. So I kind of fill the gap with memes. And yes, it’s a great way to meet new people and find more books to love.
I like that you do Saturday Snapshot. I just don’t know that my life is interesting enough to take photos of. ๐ I do a lot of sitting on the couch and, most recently, watching “Dr. Who.”
Well, when I first started blogging I participated in a lot more memes than I do now. I just got overwhelmed and tired of them. Writing them and reading them. I still do Top Ten Tuesday from time to time but if I don’t feel like it I don’t bother. I won’t read ANY Waiting on Wednesday posts anymore because it was making my TBR list become absolutely ridiculous.
I don’t know of any other fun memes really. There are some I like but they’re really small at the moment.
I don’t read or do Waiting on Wednesday for the same reasons, Jenny. ๐ I’m still trying my best to catch up on stuff that’s already published.
Ooh, what memes do you like? The community around it may be small, but if it’s active, it’s worth joining.
I’m feeling a little uncertain about memes too, and in fact took this week off from all memes. My favorite is Top Ten Tuesday but sometimes it’s difficult to come up with a new list of ten books every week. I’ve never participated in WWW Wednesday but I like the idea of that one a lot.
One meme I like to read but haven’t participated in yet is Retro Friday hosted by Angieville where you review an older book or one that’s under the radar. It’s a little more effort since it involves writing another review, so it probably wouldn’t be something you’d do every week.
I guess I’m on the lookout for new memes too, so hopefully we’ll both find what we’re looking for ๐
Another problem I’ve found with TTT is that I end up listing a lot of the same books over and over again; I can’t begin to count how many times I’ve listed Pride and Prejudice and Graceling. It’s just getting to feel repetitive.
I like the idea of Retro Friday. I bet you wouldn’t have to even do a full review, really. It could be kind of like Waiting on Wednesday, except you’re talking about a book that’s already been published. I bet it still adds to the “problem” of an ever-expanding TBR list! ๐
I’m thinking about trying out Saturday Snapshot. I’m no photographer, but I think it could be a cool way to document various times. If you find any new memes you totally love, share ’em with me! ๐
